Val'shistory - I began my teaching career in 1968 in a place in Africa so remote it probably qualifies as unplottable. There was no electricity, and running water was something that happened three times per day perhaps. But there were books, huge quantities of books, in fact. And this was the beginning of my interest in books for children and young people. Over the years I have worked as a secondary English teacher, a Junior Primary teacher and a teacher-librarian. My growing interest in children's literature eventually led me to studying for an MLitt. at the University of New England, and after that I joined the Childrens' Book Council. I have held various positions, including branch president and national president, and am still very much involved with the South Australian Branch Committee. Since I retired from teaching three years ago I have gone back to my first love - the classical languages which were the subject of my original degree - and spend much of my time restoring my knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek.
